You'll find DIY shoe designs in each issue of Altered Couture magazine , published quarterly by the same folks who publish Belle Armoire, a gorgeous magazine devoted to wearable art. I frequently have shoes in their pages, many of which have not been seen either in my book or on this site.

If you're interested in wearable art and live within driving distance of the San Francisco Bay Area, you ought to check out the wonderful group I belong to, the Peninsula Wearable Art Guild. They meet once a month in Saratoga and offer information, support, encouragement, excellent and inexpensive classes and priceless camaraderie for people making wearable art of all kinds - clothing, jewelry, hats, purses and - of course - shoes!

One fun way to find shoes to paint, bead, bedeck and embellish (especially if you have unusual-size feet) is to go to Sharon Raymond's web site, Simple Shoemaking. Sharon is the author of Creating Handmade Shoes, and she has created special "blank slate" sandals for you to embellish. If you want, you can even buy them unassembled so they're easier to paint, then send the pieces back to her to put together. Check out her Shoemaking Collaborations page.

If you want to go all the way and make your own shoes from scratch, check out Mary Wales Loomis's book Make Your Own Shoes. It's the only one of its kind. You'll find it on her site, Make Your Own Shoes .
