You can paint really cool shoes using a nice stiff natural sponge like this one. The trick is to dab the sponge in a shallow pool of paint but don't saturate it! Then dab the paint-tipped sponge on a piece of paper just to make sure you are going to get little sponge-tip marks, not blobs. If it looks good, go ahead and apply to the shoe.  Do this little paper test each time you dab the sponge in paint and you'll be happy with your results. (Also, you can cut or tear the sponge into smaller pieces if that's easier for you to work with.)
